Leg Vein Removal Q & A
Why do I have leg veins?
You may have leg veins because the valves in your veins are too weak to push the blood back towards your heart. Unlike the rest of your body, the veins in your legs work against gravity to help push the blood through your body. The extra work may weaken the valves and cause some of the blood in the veins to pool, causing the unsightly bulges on your legs.
These veins are referred to as varicose or spider veins. Spider veins are generally smaller than varicose veins. More than 50% of women in the United States have varicose veins.
Are leg veins dangerous to my health?
Spider veins usually don’t cause health problems, but varicose veins may cause some health issues, such as pain and discomfort.
Varicose veins may also cause:
- Formation of a blood clot
- Bleeding
- Non-healing ulcers
If your leg veins are causing you discomfort or you’re experiencing any other symptoms, you should see Dr. Allen for an evaluation. She may be able to provide treatment to relieve your symptoms.
How are leg veins treated?
You have many treatment options for your leg veins. To improve circulation, Dr. Allen may recommend you elevate your legs when you can and engage in physical activity to help keep your blood moving. Use of compression stockings may also be recommended to help the fight against gravity.
If your leg veins are severe, she may recommend laser treatment with the Elite+ laser.
What is the Elite+ laser?
The Elite+ laser is a specialized tool that uses dual laser energy to provide you with fast and efficient treatment. In addition to helping get rid of your leg veins, Dr. Allen also uses the Elite+ laser to remove unwanted hair and improve skin tone.
What can I expect during laser treatment?
The Elite+ laser uses fast and targeted pulses of light to damage your vein, causing it to shut down and fade away. Discomfort during treatment is minimal, but you may feel like a light pin prick as the laser works over your skin. Treatment time varies, but usually doesn’t take more than 30 minutes.
While you may notice an improvement in the look of your legs immediately after treatment, it takes up to six weeks for the vein to fully disappear.
