Ultrasound Q & A

How do ultrasounds work?

Ultrasound imaging, or sonography, uses sound waves to produce images of what’s inside your body. Ultrasounds help doctors diagnose illnesses, assist with medical procedures, or monitor development during pregnancy.

In the early stages of pregnancy, an ultrasound can determine your baby’s due date and show whether you are having twins or multiples. In later stages of pregnancy, an ultrasound can indicate the sex of your baby.

Dr. Allen offers both 3D and 4D ultrasounds for expectant mothers so you can get the most vivid images of your baby before he or she is born.

What does a 3D ultrasound image show?

A 3D ultrasound image allows you to see your baby from several different angles. With traditional 2D ultrasound images, you may just see your baby’s profile from one side. When you have a 3D ultrasound, you’ll be able to see the surface of your baby’s whole face so it appears more photographic.

What does a 4D ultrasound image show?

The 4D ultrasound takes 3D imaging one step further. Like 3D ultrasounds the images you see with a 4D ultrasound are similar to a photograph. However, with a 4D ultrasound, you’ll also be able to see your baby’s movement, like a video. You can see your baby doing things in real time.

Often with 4D ultrasounds, moms and dads get to see their babies opening and closing their eyes, moving around, sucking their thumbs, all in real time. This technology has become increasingly popular as eager parents-to-be can’t wait to see what their baby looks like.
